Charles City Co., VA located in the greater Richmond area of the state today and is bounded on the south by the James River and on the east by the Chickahominy River. It was established in 1619 by the Virginia Company and was one of the first four boroughs established by that company. In 1643 it was made a shire and named in honor of Price Charles who later became King Charles I of England.
This is one of the earliest and rare listing of those land owners in the county and called “quit rent”. This was in essence property tax of the day and cost the owner one shilling per fifty acres. The Sheriff collected the money which eventually came back to the area to cover expenses for administrative necessities.
